EXILED KING OF ITALY DIES IN ALEXANDRIA
Received Monday, 9.40 a.m. LONDON, DeC. 28. King Victor Emmanuel of Italy died in Alexandria today at the age of 78 years. The cause of his death was arterio-sclerosis. King Victor Emmanuel had been living in Egypt in exile since May, 1946. He retained the style King of Italy because although he had relinquished the Crown to his-son, Prince Umberto, he did not abdicate, but took office as Lieut.-Gen-eral of the Realm. He died in- the villa in which he had been living in a suburb of Alexandria. The Associated PTess.' Rome correspondent says that Monarehist cireles in Italy were not aware that King Victor Emmanuel had been ill, but .itiiWas known that he was depressed as a result of . the" recent , legislation barring him or his heirs from returning to Italy.
