DIVIDENDS HELD UP IN MANAWATU CUP
Judicial Committee Considering Allegations of Interference
Ihe .Manawata Racmg Club's Summer carmval was opened at Awapuni 011 Saturday and the race for the Cup was one of the greatest contests ever seen at Awapuni. There we.re twenty stai'ters and half a mile from home the field was well bunched and everything had a ehance. The paee had been 011 all the way and it was as the field swept into the straight that Arco, Gay Stfoller and Robin's Reward, the three which fouglit out tfie finish, moved forward to be well in the picture. With a furlong still to cover, Arco had hit the front, and it was wlien Gay Stroller and Robin's Reward commenced their runs that incidents oceurred which resulted in the hold-up of the dividends and about which the Judicial Committee heard lengthy evidence. Yesterday it was announced that the inquiry would be continued today and that the Judicial Committee 's decision was likely to be announced tonight.
Reasons for Inquiry The reasons for the inquiry are: (1) An allegation that there was interference hy the winner, Gay Stroller, with Robin's Reward, which ran third, and with Arco, which ran second; and (2) the allegation by the connections of Gay Stroller that there was interference with Gay Stroller by Arco's rider. The day was fine aml the eourse was very fast. ln the Fitzherbert Handieap it is probable that -the Stratfoni-trained niare, Aggravatioii, established a uew seven-fiu'long record for Awapuni wlien she rau the distance in 1.25 1-5. The totalisator turnover was £75,952 l()s, conipared with £73,0-72 10s last year, the iucrea.se being £2880. The Cup Race The race for the Cup was oue of the best ever seen at Awapuni, and live furlongs after the start the field, in close order, was being led by Morotai with Citation, Welcoine Guest, Alright, Robin's Reward and Gay Stroller following in that order. They ran the lirst live furlongs in (54 2-5 seconds. The pa.ce was right on at the six furlongs and il was as they were approacliing Ihe live tliat Citation ino\ed past Morotai to lead past the four followed by Morotai, Robin's Reward, Welcoine Guest, Gay Stroller, Alright. Langue d'Or, lniperial and Rosswood. It was near the half that lniperial pulled out of line with his rider ol>viously in trouble. lniperial was going well at the time and il was announced later that Connor, with the saddle adrift as the result of broken gear, had no option but to do what he diil. Citation led the lield into the straight and Welcoine Guest, Arco, Morotai, Gay Stroller, Alright and Kobin's Reward were all in a bunch behind the leader at the honie tuni. Below the distance Arco was in charge and he was soon under pressurc to meet the ehallenge from Gay Stroller which headed him. Then Robin's Reward made a line run on the outor and Gay Stroller won in a thrilling linish bv a long liead from Arco a liead in front of Robin's Reward. Merry Robin linislicd well for fourth and the next to linish were Langue d'Or, f.oyal Bian and Catterick Bridge. Attractive Win by Ruling Moment Ruling Moiuent from Wingatui won Ihe hurdles. He was in front bel'ore the lield liud travelled half a mile and ouce ] he hit tlie l'ront iie never lel't it in doubt. The pace was on right from the start and Bevongue fell at the lirst t'ence and Tudor Cliief went down over her. Through the straight the lirst time Ruling Moment* led from Park Liglit
and Glen Urquhart, Middoon, Baksoon, Tribute, Peter Brierly, Grand Central, Top Sail, Timber Bay and Gynerio. The field was well strung out at the six wliere Glen Urquhart, Royal Moutoa, Middoon and Park Liglit were most prominent. Ruling Moment led to the last hurdle where Royal Aloutoa came to grief and Ruling Moment won easily by three lengths from Glen Urquhart a similar distance in front of Baksoon a neck in front of Middoon wilk a liead to Tribute. Some Big Dividends The earlv leader was Sun Burn from Beau Raide, Balcairn, Baffles Rex, Rotlinic, Dancing Girl, Reignon, Arctie Circle, Foxtonian, Patunui and Commercial. The pace was right on and they broke 51 for the lirst half-inile. Batl'les Rex was in second plaee behind Sun Burn into the. straight and Rotlinic was in third place ahead of Beau Raide, Goimuercial, Poxtonian, Reignon and Arctic Circle. llalf-way down the home Mreteli Rotlinic ran jiast Sun Burn and he won by a short length. Sun Burn linished strongly and he beat the fastlinishing Arctic Circle by two lengths. Reignon was fourth followed by Beau Raide and Baffles Rex. Aggravation's Fast-ntn Seven Aggravatioii won1 the open sprint iu very fast time and she paid a doubloligure win dividend. The lield travelled last from barrier rise and at the four, reached in 3(5 seconds, The Pagan led from Flying Dink, Brown Derby, Aggravatioii, Craven, Sea Fury and Stony Broke. The Pagan still had charge a /urlong from home, but Brown Derby was with him and they were lighting it out wlien Aggravatioii dashed up 011 the outer to win brilliantly by a length., Brown Derby was second, a liead in front of The Pagan, and just over a length away came Sea Fury on the outer and Carmelitu on the inuer. They rau the lirst half-mile iu 48 2-5 and the Jast three in 36 4-5sec. A Win for Fleetwood The Gillies liaiulicap was another fast -run race and the winner was Fleetwood from Beau Reve and Fine Flavour. Beau Reve was first to break the line and he led along the lnick stretch followed by Lady Oratory, Fleetwood, Fine Flavour, Grand- Affair, Torrent and Graeme 's ,)oy. Beau Reve led' Fleetwood into the straight and Fleetwood joined issue a furlong from home und won going away by two lengths. Beau Reve beat Fine Flavour just as easily. Angell was fourth and there was a big gap to Torrent at tlie head l)f the otiiers. The Stormovik Beats Mesalliance Mesalliance was made favourite for ihe cducluding event but he was beaten
into second place by The Stormovik which, after being third into the straight, seeured a straight run along the rails and won by a neck. Morning Dew was responsible for most of the "pace and he and Argumentative led into the straight attended by The Stormovik, Fort Royal, Beneve, Mesalliance, Desert Fox and Sailor Boy. Below "the distance The Stormovik moved through to take on Mesalliance and, althougli Mesalliance responded under pressure, The Stormovik beat him by a neck. The Denbigh, not prominent in the run to the straight, finished well fqr third two lengths from Mesalliance. Morning Dew was fourth and Desert Fox fifth.
