The general coimcil of the British Trades Union Congress issued a statement \ve]comi«£ the Marshall pJan as a "statesmanlike approaeh to the pro'blems oi' Eprope." and decided to inst moths representati'ves on the World Federation oi' Trades Unions to iirgc aeoeptanee oi" the plan when Ihe rouncil of- the federation ineels in Paris in Fehruary. 11 is eonsidered 1 his derision will inevitably precipitate a West versus Mast rlash in Ihe World Federation as Ihe British resolution •will certainly be opposed by the Russian and Slav l)loc representatives. On the other liand it will l)e supported by representatives of the Western Fnropean trades unions who have already itrged the British T.F.O. to adopt this stand. In addition to issuing this plain challenge to the TRtissia'ns, theo T.F.t 1. rouncil went further and adopted a resolution ''ongratulating Mr. Frnest Bevin on liis efforts "to reach an agreed settlement of Fnropean probleins in aerordance with the prinriples oi' jnstice, dernocracy and freedoni."
