Bt»y Deserter Likes N.Z. The case of a boy aged 16 who deserted his ship at Wellington this month was heard in the Wellington Children's Court. The boy said that he had met people in New Zealand who were 'kind to him and he wished to stay. He had no special reason for deserting but when questioned by Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., he refused to return to his home in England. The Magis- j trate said that in the boy's own in- | terests he would be committed to j the care of the superintendent of t the Child Welfare Department and ; probably work on a farm. The Scilly Isles are approximately. 400 miles from the mouth of the Thames, and until she became becalmed the barque had been averaging seven knots an hour, or just short of 170 miles a day. Illness of School Children Tartar emetic, which is widely used for spraying tomatoes, is blamed for the poisoning of 100 Gosford (New South Wales) school children last Friday. The GOvernment analyst (Dr. H. B. Taylor) said that some sweets eaten' by children at the Christmas party at the Gosford primary schodl had been found to contain tartar emetic. The poison, which is usually in the form of white crystals, is mixed with sugar and used for fruit spraying. It is considered that some poisoned sugar was used in making the sweets. Though the children become violently 111 and one was admitted to hospital, there was no permanent injury.
