Post Office Holidays The Levin Post Office will be closed in all its branches on December 25 (Christmas Day), December 26 (Boxing Day), January 1 (New Year's Day) and January 2, except in 'the telephone exchange, which will be open continuously. On December 27 and January 3 the usual Saturday morning attendance will be observed. Maternity Home Conference The conference planned for this week between the Health Department and the Palmerston North Hospital Board was postponed, as the Director-General of Health, Dr. Ritchie, and the Director of the Hospital Division of the Health Department, Dr. McNickle, were unable to attend. The meeting was ' to have discussed staif accommodation at the Otaki and Foxton maternity homes, Large Pay-out Over £18,250 in back pay was handed out to employees of the Auckland Transport Board last week, otated the manager in a report to the board on Monday. The increase in pay and allowances for traffi,c employees were granted under- a decision of a disputes tribunal when the parties were unable to agree in conciliation, and over 60,000 waybills had to be checked and re-cast in the light of the tribunal's decisidns. Rain Badly Needed Since November 1 only 2.35 inches of rain have fallen in the Levin district and pastures and gardens are now showing the effects of the drought conditions. In November only 1.1 inches of rain fell, while for December the total so far is 1.25 inches, most of it occurring in the first week: Milk production is reported to be falling as a result of the long dry spell. which older residents claim to be •the worst since 1932 for this time of ■the year. Rain is forecast for today or tomorrow; it is urgently needed ■and would be generally welcomed.
