WELLINGTON, Dec. 15.
Tlie Government has deeided to appoint a eommittee of inquiry under the provisions of the transport legisla tion, to report on the taxi iiidustrv. When announcing this today the Minister of Transport, Mr. Ilaekett, said the inquiry was the result of representations made to the Goveru mnnt. The coiiimittee would eomprise' tluee members, one from the Transport Department. oue from the New Zealand Federation of Labour, and one from thv New Zealand Mnnicipal Association. Its order of referenee would inelude the general econoinic conditions in the in dn>try, the issue of ta.xicab licences and 1 axi drivers' licences, the alleged ' tratlicking " in licences, payments for goodwill, the internal organisation oi the industry and the stanuard of serviee rendered to the public. The eommittee would eonunence its work early in the new vear and would hold public sittings in .the four main cities and principal towns. The person nel of tlie eommittee would be announced as soon as available.
