Theft from Rose Show The Levin police have recovered the £5 which was unlawfully removed from the Red Cross afternoon tea stall at the Levin Horticultural Society's Summer Show on November 18. The offender was dealt with in the Juvenile Court on Friday. Motor Cyclist Injured As- a result of an accident in the vicinity of Ashhurst on Saturday a motor cyclist named Salmon'd, of Maxwell 's Line, Awapuni, received injuries which necessitated his removal to the Palmerston North Hospital. His condition last night was reported to be satisfactory. No further details were fivailable. Relief Expresses Cancelled In view of the fact -that the infantile paralysis threat and the earlier closing of schools have reduced the amount of holiday train travel, the Railways Department has cancelled two relief expresses which were to have run on December 19. They were scheduled to leave Wellington for Auckland at 1.50 p.m. and 8.55 p.m. Passengers who have reserved on those trains are being allotted seats on other expresses on the same day.. Weather Broadcasts Extended The Minister of Broadcasting (Hon. F. Jones) stated in response to requests that it has been decid- , ed to -extend the weather broad- , casts: From December 22 the main national stations "will broadcast at •9 a.m. a repetition of the weather forecast given at 7.15 a.m. In the event of a sudden change in weather conditions a new forecast will be prepared. The Minister stated that the 9 a.m. broadcast will fill i a longfelt need for those unable to j hear the 7.15 a.m. broadcast. Shortage of space in the union ! headquarters at the port building 1 in Quay Street has resulted in the ' Auckland branch of the Water- j side Workers' Union making arrangements to hold its monthly stopwork meetings next year in the Town Hall. The hall has been booked from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the second Thursday in each month with the exception of one or two months when the date has been altered to avoid clashing with . an earlier booking. The assembly hall at the port buildings can accommodate only about 1000 of the union's 2000 members and the space on this floor has been further restricted by the recent construction of a cafeteria. The Town Hall has a capacity for 2819. Homes for Ex-servicemen More than 30,000 ex-servicemen of the recent war have already been directly assiSted under rehabilitation to obtain homes. This is disclosed in a statement from the Rehabilitation Board showing the financial assistance rendered as at the end of October.. Rehabilitation loans authorised 'during October totalled £1,165,142. This brought the sum of loan assistance to £44,715,710 granted to 54,800 exservicemen and women. Farm loans for the month numbered 93, valued at £383,030. This made a total of 4397 farm loans w'orth £17,685,247. Housing loans, for buying and building, were ihcreased during October bv 501, worth £594,804, bringing tne total to 18,198 of such loans valued at £21,328,274.
