BRIGHTEST SINCE HALLEY'S
The brilliant new comet in the southern sky was plahily visible from Levin last night between 9.30' and 10 p.m. It is reported to havp been seen in South/ Africp, an,d" Australia, and is now moving into-view over New Zealand. ■ A message from Sydney stated that it is the brightest since Halley'^ comet, "which was last' seen in 1£)1Q. Its- position in the sky is near the planet Venus. , 'The Director of the Commonweal'th Observatqry at Canberra cablqd his observations to Cppenhagpn to he "included in the inte'rnatipnal records. The Eastern i-Statps first reported the comet early this week, but no confirmation was given until, the reports from all the States and from South Afripa had been correlated. Observers * in Victoria, Canberra, New South Wales, Queensland and We§tern Australia had also sighted the comet. It glows brilliantlj with a reddish-yellow light and has* an incandescent tail whicb extpnds vertically upwards.
