Big Air Mail The heaviest air mail from Australia for a long time crossed the | Tasman yesterday in two of the' j Tasman Empire Airways flying j boats, which left Sydney yesterday morning. The mail, which accumu- | lated in Sydney during the radio j operators' strike, is about 17661b. i and was loaded aboard the flying ! boats Tasman and Australia. There ! is other air freight in a'ddition. Mangaone Stream Flooding Considerable trouble experienced | with the flooding of the Mangaone i Stream near Bunnythorpe led the i Railways Department to ask yes- , terday's meeting of the Kairanga County Council to give attention to the stream within the boundaries of the Kairanga County. The matter is to be referred by the council to the Manawatu Catchment Board. Women's Division Meets The Levin Women's Division of Federated Farmers held its final meeting of the year on Tuesday. There was an excellent attendanc. After the usual business ha'd been transacted members were entertained by Mesdames H. Easton (songs), J. Perigo (recitations) and C. E. C. Webb (songs). After - noon tea was in charge of Mesdames Neas, Pedersen, Baldick and MacDonald. The next meeting will be held in February. Carnival Postponed The R.S.A. carnival, which was to- have been held on the Levin Park Domain, has been postponed on account of the infantile paralysis outbreak. This decision was made at the ' meeting of the Memorial Hall Committee. It was suggested that the carnival, which was to have been held for the purpose of raising money for the memorial hall, be held in April. Arrangements for the function will be made at the next meeting of the committee. Teachers' Year Ends
On instructions from the Wel- 1 lington Education Board, teachers at the Levin Public School ceased work today. Normally they would have carried on till December 18. During the past few 'days teachers from Levin, Poroutawhao, Ohau and Muhunoa attended a refresher course at the Levin school. This included addresses on the teaching of spelling, social studies, native j flora and music. Discussion, groups j have dealt with phases of infant j and junior standards 'work, and also nature and social studies as affecting the senior classes. Classes j have also been conducted in handiwork, architecture and art. Mayor Takes Coat Off It is not an uncommon thing for Foxton's MayOr, Mr. H. H. Podmore, to take his coat off when he works, but a definitely unusual sight was witnessed on Easton Park on a recent evening when the Mayor was 'Seen minus coat carrying out repairs to a borough reserve fence. The cricket club, which is using this reserve, had been troubled with stock damaging its pitch and it was found that the animals were gaining access to the park as a result of a fence being down. The matter was reported to the council and the Mayor, kriowing that the borough staff was fully engaged on urgent sewerage work, went along one evening equipped with tne necessary gear and did the job himself. In the report of the Levin Music Club's end-of-year function, which appeared yesterday, the name of Miss M. Irving-, who contributed songs, was inadvertently omitted.
