PROHIBITION ON GATHERINGS
WELLINGTON, Dec. 8. The Medical .Officer of Health in Wellington, Dr. Hubert Smith, commenting on the ban on children under 46 years of age attending gatherings, said the prohibition applied to the attendance of children at "any type of gathering." This, he said, would mean that open air as well as indoor gatherings were included such as race meetings, athletic gatherings, picnics and beach carnivals. Under Section 77 of the Act, the penalty on conviction for nonobeyance directly or indirectly by act or default of such prohibition, is a fine of £50 and in the event of a continuing offence, £50 for every day of continuance after the first day. Dr. Smith said the Health Department was also advising against all unnecessary adult gatherings. He would, he said, include dances in unnecessary gatherings as well as seasonable celebrations not confined to a family. "Any unnecessary new contact should be avoidefl," he said.
