The carpenters ' shop and the spare parts store, containing irreplaceabie equipment, also were consumed. The saving of the fitters' shop alougside Ihe mill, aud the prevention of the spread to the new No. 1 mill and other buildings, was only achieved by the outstauding work of the firefighters iu the intense heat. Had tfc not been for the fire-fighting equipment iustalled only three months ago, there is no knowing where the flames would have stopped, vvitli conditions so dry. An idoa of the (iqrceness ot' the flames may be gauged from the fact that the alarm whistie went at 3 a.m., and before 5 a.m. the mill, with its valuable maehinery, had been completely burnt out. , A serious t'eature is the loss of the gear in the spare parts store. This was Ivllis and Burnand's contral depot, upou which all the mills in tbe vicinity couJ'l draw.
