EPIDEMIC SHOWS SHORTAGE OF NURSES
AUCKLAND, Dec. 4. Positive. infantile paralysis cases in the Auckland central health district in- 1 creased by three to 23 today and the number of suspect cases rose from 15 to 1A . - The ne-w cases were children aged five, six and 11 years ftom the metropolitan area. They Avere. previousiy shspeet cases. Sixteen of positive cases and ten of mispects are males. Most of . the patientn are children aged up to 10 years. " A second positivfe chse, a girl aged 16, from the (Gordonton district has been reported in the Waikato. ^ The first case was admitted from Te A winiata on Tuesday. • In Taranaki one suspect case has become positive and there are now three positive and' two suspect cases in the pi'ovince. V suspeeted case was reported in the Wellington- Wanganui - Hawke's Hav health district. The case was an- IS months old child from Horopito who has been admitted to the Wanganui hospital. . . The 40 cases in the Auckland Hospital. have aggravated the shortage of nursing staff. The medieal superintendent, Dr. .T. W» Ctaven, said "the hospital was sadly in need of trained; rturses to meet the emergency. A good response had followed an nppeal for volunteers but among them there were few trained nurses.
