AUCKLAND, Dec. 3. Tlie mate on the passenger ferry Albatross was lost overboard 011 a tmns-hiirbour nin from Birkenhead to the city via Xorthcote this afternnon. He was Mr. William O'Connor, aged 2 z, single, of Birkenhead. Mr. O'Connor, who was a nephew of the niaster of ttte Albitti'oss, Captain T. O'Connor, was attending to a rope after the vesstu left Xorthcote and in giving it a tug losl his balance and fell overboard. ito •is believed to have struck his head in Ihe 1'all. The engineer, who saw tne accident, noti/ied the captain and ihe ferry was immediately put into reverse. Mr. O'Connor was see.n struggling ni the water but he disappeared as the ferry was approaching liim. Tlie Albatross and vehieular ferry AEollvhawlc made a thorough search of the area without success. A swift ebb tide- was running. Air. O'Connor joined the company about a fortnight ago. Ile was the first employec to fall overboard and lose his life.
