FIRST GAMES IN COMPETITION The Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association's southern area competition was lapnehed over the weekend, but rain on Saturday marred most matches. On Sunday the Levin B1 and £2 teams met, the top team prcvmg too sttrong for the second string, winning all 16 sets and 132 games to 58. Nevertheless, soine excellent matches were witnessed. One of the best, and certainly the mo'st enjoyable to wateh, was the mixed donbles between S. J. Thompson and Miss Mary Karanti and C. Lagor and Miss Norma Hall, the former pair winning 9 — 7. Results of individual games were' as follows, B1 players being mentione'd first in each instance: — . * Men's singles: Mcllraith beat Wardeil 9 — 7, Benning beat J. Tomlinson 9 — 3, S. J. Thompson beat Lagor . 9 — 4, Roskruge beat Antcliff 9 — 3. Ladies' singles: Mrs. Patterson beat Miss Mulcahy 7 — 3, Mrs. Parter beat Miss Cameron 7 — 3, Miss Karauti beat Miss Hail 7 — 3, Miss Hesp beat toiss Bell 7 — 3. Men's doubles: Mcllraith and Benning beat Waraell and Lagor 9 — 4, Thompson and Roskruge beat Tomlinson and Antcliff 9 — 3. Ladies' doubles: Mesdames Patterson and Porter beat Misses Cameron and Mulcahy 7 — 1, Misses Karauti aird Hesp beat Misses Hall and Bell 7 — 1. Mixed doubles: Mcllraith and Mrs. Patterson beat Wardeil and Miss Mulcahy 9 — 6, Benning and Mrs. Porter beat .Tomlinson and Miss Cameron 9 — 4, Thompson ancl Miss Karauti beat Lagor and Miss Hall 9—7. Roskruge and Miss Hesp beat Antcliff and Miss Bell 9 —3. Members are reminde'd of the grand gala day and dance being held next Saturday by the Foxton Club. For tliose unable to niake the irip to Foxton, the first round of the president's trophy wili be played on the local courts, eoixum neing at 2 p.m. sharp. Miss Hall and Miss Hooker are on tea cb.uy this week. Several iadder matches are due for decision this week. Anyone not on the iaclder and desirous oi playing in the competition is advise d to challenge for a place on the lauder since the teams for these matches ora clioS^ffi as far as possibie from the Iaclder.
