WELLINGTON'S FIRE HAZARDS
> WELLINGTON, Nov. 21. Dangerous fire hazardg exist in Wellington. Thi£f is the opinion of the
superintendent of the brigade, Mr. C. A. Woolley, voiced at a meeting of the Pire Board today. In one case, he said, the imgade found stairways littered with cardboard cartons. In cases like that it would mean that the people in the upper storeys would be cut off. "It is not a matter of minutes bnt seconds, ' ' said Superintendent Woolley, ' ' to pinpoint the head of a stairway or • door and regch it, let alone use it. ' ' Relating recent experiences, Superintendent Woolley said he found it difficplt to move ahout in a building that he knew very well, even when he was provided with a strong tprch, owing to the rapidity with which smoke, hot air and gases arose and when the outbreak • - - was somewhere below. The superintendent added thyt under the new regulations such matters would be attpnded to but there was a tremendous job ahead as there were many thousands of buildings to be attended to throughout New Zealand. {
