Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh drove out of Broadlands unseen by reporters and townsfolk dowp Southampton Road in Earl Mountbatten's jeep this afternoon, They went for a jaunt round the couritryside. The Duke drove and the Princess carried her Corgi dog, The little post office at Romsey was almost snowed under with telegrams, letters and cables for Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh. A special staif has been recruitecj to deal with them. The Royal couple later began opening and reading the messages of congratulation from all over the world. The gates at Broadlands were heavily guarded with police and plain clothes men patrolled the grounds.
Princess Elizabeth has asked for complete privacy and she is not expecied to maxe a public appearance until November 23, when the couple will attend Divine service at Romsey Abbey. London celebrated the wedding until almost dawn. Drinks were 4'oii the house" at many public houses until 2 a.m. The revelryj weno on in the West End tiil weilj past midnight. Hundreds slept inj doorways or remained in the jsireets, waiting for early trains. As dawn came cieaners and road sweepers began tidying up the greatest accumulation of left-over iitter since VE-day. Princess Elizabeth's wedding dress in a glass case is to be ineluded in a public display of the wedding presents at Su. James' Palace from December 1 for a considerable period. The takings will go to charities which the Royai couple have chosen. Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh have issued a statement saying that they are deeply touehed by the telegrams and letters they have received l'rom wellwishers, but they cannot hope to answer them all personally.
