GLowry, of Otaki, who was member of Parliament for the Otaki electorate rrom' 1985 unth lagt year, when Jae did not seek reelection t.o the House a,t the genpral election because of ill-hiealth. Though he had not regained normal health, Mr. Lowry's passing was unexppcted, and came as n shock to his relatives and many friends, During the lengthy period that he repre'Sented the otaki electorate in the House he made a host of friends throughout' thjs district, and his higli ideals and sincerity pf pqrppse won him the esteem Of eyeryone with whom he came in contact. He wgs a returned soldier of .World War I, and in 1942 visited the United Kingdom at the invitation pf the United Kingdom branch pf the Empire Parliamentary Assocjation to inspect war conditions there and to meet Parliamentary colleagues at Westminster. ■ Mr. Lowry wns born in Londpn in 1884, and was edqcated at Barnet Grajnmar School. Hje entered the Ciyil Service, bqt anxious to see something of the world, resigned from his position and travelled extensively, finally settling in 1 New Zealand in 1906. Before the first World War, he was in the employ of the Wellington City CounciJ. He left New Zealand for overseas with the fifth reinforcements, and on his return from active service in 1918 was offered an appointment in the New Zealand Defence Forces. This he declmeti, and instead he decided to take np business as a. bookseller and stationer in Otaki, where he had lived ever since. Mr, Lowry's election as member for the district was preceded by a long period, of service to the cbmmunity in which he lived. ' . Mr. Lowry-, who was a supporter of the Labour Party, took a keen interest in defepce questipns and served as a member of the defence committee of the House. Few members of the House have been more universally popular than he. Left to mourn their loss are his widow, one son, Mr. L. ; Lowry (Lower Hutt) , and two daughters, Mesdames Buchanan (Masterton) and McKinnon (Lower Hutt) . They will receive much sympathy in their loss. The funeral takes place at Otaki on Monday after a service at the Methodist Church at 2 p.m.
