WEALTH OF SUMMER BLOOMS

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY'S SHOW WAS POPULAR ATTRACTION

The Levin Horticulture Society's .summer show attracted large crowds to the Regent Hall yesterday. Floral entries were heavy and the standard achieved was most commendable. The vegetable section, however, was not as large as in past years, but this was compensated for by the quality of the exhibits.

. Prior to the opening of the show, the president, Rev. E. T. King, welcomed the visitors and also the Mayor aird patron, Mr. H. B. Biirdekin, and Mrs. Burdekin, Mr. A. W. Parton, president of the Levin and District Beautifying Society, and Mrs Parton, and Miss H. E. Bowen. He thanked all exhibitors, stewards and judges and members of the committee. He regretted that the secretary, Mrs. Lynch, was unable to be present, and thanked Miss Todd for deputising. Mr. King also referred to the interest in the society which had always been shown by Mr. and Mrs. Burdekin. Declaring the show officialiy open, Mr. Burdekin congratulated all who had helped towards the success of the show. Gardening had a great future in Levin, he said, and was a necessary part of the civic life of a community. Many of the exhibitors had loyaily supported the society for many years, and showed a true love of flow.ers. Particularly outstanding, were the native flora, roses and school sections. Mr. W. J. - Summer's pansies were the subject of high praise from the judge, who considered them the best he had seen. The champion bloom was Mrs. L. J. Hunter's rose, and Rod Clarke won the prize for the best bloom in the novice class. The Otaki State School won the j Wilson-Grant Shield with 34 ■ points.
