The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Stafford Cripps, in the- House of Oommons today, presented a message from His Majesty in conneccion with Princess Elizabeth's wed"ding, which the Speaker read. Tne message said that His Majesty, relying on the affeetion and cordial interest which his faithful House of Commons had manifested in the forthcoming marrjage of Princess Elizabeth an,d Lieutenant Mountbatten, and desiring that provision should be made for thern, wks wiiling, to avoid burdening the people at present, to place at the House of commons'" disposal the sum derived from the saving on the Civil List made during the war, so that the provision made should for a period impose no additional charge on public funds. The leader of the House, Mr. Heroert Morrison, gave notice- of motion that he would move at the beginning of the Commons business tomorrow for the appointment • of a seiecu eommittee to consider His Majesty's message. His Majesty's offer to make his own provision for Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Mountbatten means that there will be no burden on public funds for possibly two years, says Reuter, The King's allowance is £410,000 of which 134,000 is set aside for the payment of fixed salaries and retirement pensions. The expenses of the ; Court and Household amount -to j £152, U00, and alms and other I special expenses take £13,200. The Qusen receives no separate allowance. Tne Royal Family during the war practised many economies in staff" and living expenses at Buckingham and Windsor Palaces. The King in one year saved £20,000. Princess Elizabeth in her own right receives £15,000 annually. She became entitled to this under the Civil List Act, 1937, when she was 21 years of age.
