Rise In Rates In Levin
Sir, — There is one thing which ratepayers will not forget when they vote on Wednesday and iti is that in the last year, under Mir. Burdekin's. guidanee as Mayor, the general rate in the borough has jumped about £2 'on the average quarter aere section and In some cases very much more. Why should this be? Practically nothing but maintenance work has been done in the borough, and very poor maintenance as far as our footpaths are concerned. I have been told that the council has been fairy godmother to two ratepayers in that it provided the water mains for their subdivisions. at a cost of £600 to the ratepayers as a wliole. In ofher words some 300 ratepayers had their rates . increased to benefit a chosen two. This appears to have been kept very quiet. Mr. Burdekin is going to give us aerodromes, extrgi playing areas, tmpxove the water supply, build more footpaths and give us sewerage. All very well, but where is the money to come from? If rates have increased £2 for nothing, how much will they rise to give us all these? Perhaps Mr. Burdekin could tell us. Yours etc., "THE SKY'S THE LIMIT." Levin, Nov. 14.
