Although topweight aud conceding 211bs to 371 bs to his opponents he was always a short-price favourite. When the . lightweight, Red Fury, dashed away with a five lengths' le'ad rounding the turn it appeared tnat uoiummst would he heaten. In the run home, however, Columnist soon overhauled the leader and went on to defeat Fine Fettle comfortabiy with Red Fury a poor third. Columnist has now seored five wins and a third in six starts in his preseut trip to ■ Melbourne, and more than £10.000 iu stakes. He has retained !ii>form remarkablv well and today 'n performance was as good as he has dis played this spring.
