FARMERS ASKED TO PLANT BIG ACREAGE
WEL.14NGTOX, Nov. H. The Government has decided to pa> for the 1947-48 and 1948-49 wheat crops, 8s a bushel. This was announcea tonight by the Minister of lndustries and Conimeree, Hon. A. H. Nordmeyeiv "It is imperative," said the Minister, "that the highest possible acreage should be sown in vvheat next year. A recent examination of farm costs rovealed that certain increases have' taken place since the price for this season \s crop ' was iixed at 7s 4d. Under all the oireumstances the Government has decided to pay 8s a bushel for this season ls crop. and to iix the same price for the following year. If, through unt'oreseen circuinstances, farmers ' pro.ved costs justify an, increa.se beyond 8s, such an inerease will be paid to the industry in respect of that crop. "I sincerelv trust," concluded, tht} Minister, "that the early announcement of the price will iucluce farmers to sow au increased acreage of wheat, This will not ouly be of advantage to the Dominion, Unt will also assist materially other co.untries, particularly Great Britain, in their difficultfes. "
