Glading, increased his first day '.s lead of tliree to a lead oi eight strokes. His total for 36 holes is 138 against the 146 of J. Weir, his nearest rival. Prorn the calibre of golf that Glading is playing, the task of overtaking him looks extremely ditiicult. Nevv Plymouth: J. Jeffery 76, I). V. Sutherla rpl 78, T. Jefferv 80, J. Holden 81—313. Glading 's Fine Effort Conditions wero ideal for scoring atter the rain, whieh inconvenienced the iirst few starters, cleared away. A lighl northwest wind was blowing and this, without making the few holes that had to be played into it diflicult, lielped considerably at the (ifth, sixth, sevePth, 15th, 17th and 18th holes. The rain slightly itnproved the greens without taking any of the ruu off; the fairways. GLADING in his round on Thursday had breaks with him in his 68. Today he did not need thein. He played golf that brings great scoring and his score of 68 was a record for the course. His drives were long and straight and his seconds invaria.biy hit the green,
His puttdng was confident and accurate. His two's at the sixth and 14th were the repiilts of great iron shots placecl clo3e to the pin. I i was golf that suggegted the Glading is closq to the world class. He was a little fortunate at the flrst where his second came to rest betweon two bunkers and his seconds at the second and fourth were not up to Jiis usual standard, but from then on he recorded pars and birdies in a raanner that made golf look almost too easy. He was out in 34, two under tlie scratcfl score. ne droppea a stroke at the fourth hut picked up strokes at the ftfth, sixth and seventh. Coming home he set off with four pars and then ran dowii a six-foot putt for two at the 14th. He then completed the round with four perfect fours, the last two being birdies, for 34 home. His 68 clipped five off the scratch score of the course. His card read: Out: 44453245 3 — 34. In: 5 4 3 4 2 4 4 4 4—34—68. J. WEIR was again playing magnlcent golf through the greens but he could not persuade his putts to fall on the outward journey. He missed a sixfooter at the iirst, a four-footer at the third, an eight-footer at the sixtli and took three putts at the seventh. Even then he reached the tuni in 38. On the homeward half he just failed with putts of 10 feet or less on four greens but did the last nine holes in 35. Time ancl again his seconds came to rest elose to tlie flag and if he could have boled even a reasonable number of putts, he would have been in the bixties. A. MERRAY set off playing (ino consistent golf. He dropped a stroke it the first but picked it up at the third. Ile recovered well from a buuUer to obtaiu three at the sixth and. (he correct 4 5 at uext three ssnv him reach the tuni in 35. He pulled his second at the 11th whieh cost him flve but two at the 14th saw him oue tmder fours with four holes to play. A good four followod but tlie 17tli was a disaster. He was under a tree on the pight with his tee shot and tlie hole cost him six. A four at the last saw him rouud iu 73 whieh put him in third place. With the Australians A feature of the day's plav was a big iinprovement in the scores of the •Australians. At the e-iid of the first day it looked as thougli ('olledge 82 and Pix 84 might not get into tlie third day's play but both rose lo tiro oc'casion. Pix was out in 38 and home in 38 for 76 whieh gained him his place for the flnal day, wiiile (Jolledge jilayed the second best round of tlie day for a grand 72. He was out in 3(5 and had a like figure coming home. His -play through the greens was well nigh poi fect but he did not hole oue really good putt in the 18 holes. R. S. Brown followed his 77 of the first day witii a well played 74, doing 37 both ways He obtained two's at tlie sixtli aud 12th. W. A. Edgar was playing well. His 76 included a ball in tlie iake at the 15th. A. ,T. 8HAW had not so good a Iirst half and had to sink a good putt at the ninth to get out in 40. He opened the second half with a six but then set off to show his best fonn and completed the last eight holes with i5 4 3 3 ,3 4 4 4 to complete the round in 4. '(! ; . . ; " - J. JljFEERY; '»S l'4 wiis 'a splendid effort and nught liavo ehsily been bet ter but foriUtpsek on the greens earK iu the secojfti lutlf. Ile wtts' out in 36 but opened Ihe second half with 6 4 4 5. He rallied to r'eitortl 3,4 4 4-4 for the last five holes. I. A. EWEN was unluckv. Ile was out in 34 at'ler taking six at the second where he failed to recover from a bunker. He had a birdie three at Ihe fifth, an eagle three at tlie seventh and a birdie four at the eiglilh. Ile eoiutiienced tlie last nine with live and four but required (ives at tlie short 12th anc! 14th. W. G. IIORNE and B. A4. 81 LK demonstrated that their first (lay showings were all wrong by returuiug splendid 72 's. Botli did 3(i both ways. D. L. WOON was not playing the good golf that he did on tlie Iirst day. He was out in 38 and home in 39. His homeward half included seveu at the [10th and six at the 17th. A. GL'Y was out in 36 and wlieu lit nolched a birdie four at tlie long 10th, he seeuied set for a good score. Disaster overtook liini at the 11th I where he put the ball out of bounds and an eight appeared oii his card, finishing gallanlly with 3 5 2 4 4 4 4. Ile coinpleied his round in 74. Ile wns liitting the ball long distanees from the tee. W E. J0NE8, after a bad start. covered the last scven 2 4 3 4 4 4 4 to liuish witli 73. Surprise failures to gain places in tlie 60 to play tomorrow were R. G. Holland, seiui-finalist in tlie amateui championship in 1936, D. G. Leng Ward, Manawatu club clianijiion, ,T. I! Hobbs.
