WELLINGTON, Nov. 7. Her decks filled with. a catch of fish that was too large for her holds, the trawler Maimai arrived from waters south of Cape Campbell today with what is considered a New Zealand record catch for four days' trawling — 975 cases or nearjy 100,000 pounds of fish. "I have never experienced anything like it," said the skipper, Captain D. Carndo. "I have heen trawling for 18 years in the North Sea and on the New Zealand coast - J but we struck the higgest shoal of fish I have ever heard about. A good take for one trawl is about 4000lbs of fish in a net. For 48 hours from 6 p.m. Tuesday we were hauling the net in every three hours filled each time with 10,000 pounds of fish throughout the daylight hours. By the time we left the fishing grounds at 6 p.m. Thursday, we had fish of all descriptions piled three feet high over, the foredeck and the refrigerated hajd was bulging with the catch — £1500 worth. We worked until we dropped, gutting the hauls and finally had to bring half of it back untouched to be finished ashore. We simply hadn't a hope of keeping up with the , mountains of fish which piled aboard." Other Wellington ' fishermen and one from Auckland agreed that it was the largest haul of fish ever " caught in New Zealand waters in four days' trawling by one ship.
