Glading Leads Field In First Round

Prese Association)

(P2T

XEW PLYMOUTH, Nov^6. • The defending title holder, B. H. Glading (Titirangi) demonstrated that he will be dif&cult to push ofE his pedestal, by leading the field in the first round of the Xew Zealand open. golf championship at the Ngamotu links, Xew Plyniouth, today. Out in 35 and back in 35, Glading clipped three strokes ofi' the scrateh score of ttie course in a grand display of golf. T. J. Jeffery (Xew Plymouth), D. L. Woon (Marlborough) and J. Weir. (Grange) i tied for second plaee with 73. : Scores (asterisk indieating profes*! sional) : —

Notes on the Play Conditions for the first day's play today were idcal. A light nottho/ly wind, the easiest in whieh to jilay the course, was blowing. The gfeelis, especiallv on the first lialf, presented difticulties to many players because they seemed slower than they looked. Out of bounds, fences writh their stroke and distance penalty, took toll and one plaver had to liit his sdventh off the eightk tee. Apart from K. H. Glading 's 70, the staiulard of the leading scores was not as high as it was for the first round in 1936 wheh the eliampionships were last held at Xew Plymouth. Features of tlie play were the prominencc of aiuateurs who hold seven of the first 12 plaees and the success of NetV Plymouth Club players who filled three of the first seven places. GLADING had the luck in his favour but nevertlieless his 70 was' a great effort in which he finished with a birdie, bogey and two eagles at the last four holes. He lioled from oflf the gfeen at the 15th, from the edge at the 17th and from just off the back of the green at tlie last. He had a break in -his favour at tlie 13th where his second skated over the green and would have gone a long wav through but for hitting a rspectator and stopping close enough for Glading to ehip back and sink a ninefoot pult for four. Oi; tlie outward.

journey Glading played fine golf. His driv.es were long and well direeted and his seconds found the green. He missed a putt at the third but made up for it by holing for an eagle three at tlie seventh. He reached the turn in 35, one better than seratch score. He began the intvard half with a correct five but was too strong with the chip at the next. He dropped another stroke when bunlcered at the 12th. He took three putts at the sliort 14th and his chances ot lieading off the 73 did not look brightuntil he staged his whirlwind finish. Glading 's card read: — Out: 4 4544335 3—35 In: 5 5 4 4 4 3 4 3 2—35 T. J. JEFFERY was inaking errors with 'his seconds on the outward journey but staged fine recoveries to obtain jfours gt the second and third and was a little fortunate when his second at the fourth hit the mound at the front of the green and kicked toward tlie pin. He played the remaining holes in flaw.less fashion and reached Ihe turn in 35. Ile began the home journey with two pars but dropped strokes at the 12th and ;13th. He was bunkered with his second at the 17tli. He played a great seCorid'to the last green but just failed '.ttdth an eight-foot putt for tliree. : B. L. AVOOX played good golf. He ■se"t. off with four fours but took three ;piitts\at the fiftli. Tlie correct three at tlie sixth, a birdie four at the seventh, .followed by par figures, saw him reacli 'the turn in 36. He set off on tlie home-(Warcb-half by running down a 12-foot piitt.. for 'a birdie four at tlie 10th but dropped a stroke at the next. He dropped another at tlie 15th and had to play afi.awkward approacli and sink a good put for fiVe at the 16th. He finished With two fine birdie fours. J. .WEIR'S drives were long and straight and his irons to the green were , invariablj- accurate. He putted tor Birdies and eagles time and again but the piitts refused to drop. He was level fo.urs after play ing tlie sixth 0 and his putt for an eagle three at the seventh .hnng on the edge. He reaclied the turn in 36. Cotning home he dropped a shot at the lltli when he failed to chip dead from the back of tlie green, and was in trouble from the tee at tlie 15th where six appeared on his card. He finished with three birdies to coinplete the homeward journey in 37. JVHOLDEN played spiendid golf ali the m and but for being a little short with three or tour chips, his 74 aiight have been better. He rau down a 12-foot putt for biriie four at the eiglith and reaclied the turn in 35. Ile eommenced the inward half by being shott with a chip at the 10th aiul putting the ball out oi: bounds at the next, with the result that two sixes appeared on his card. A. MUR11AY, with spiendid "golf, reached the taru in 36. Ile was hitting the ball well and did not look like making mistakes. After playing tlie 14th he was one under fours but sliglit errors in his approaches saw him drop strokes at the next two holes. B. D. BAMFJELD, the youug X'ew Plymouth player, who was lirst to leave the tee, again demonstrated his temperaruent for big golf. He covered the .first nine holes in one over par and set off-on the second half reeliug off par -figures. He stood on the 17th teCmecd.ing two fours for 7 1 but lapsed with a six and.a five. . ; A. J. fSHAAT, who won the title at Ngamotu in 1936, went out in .37, one Qve'r scratch. silore. He picked this up ■Witll a birdie at the 10th but pushed his .second putt at the next and took fivoX Disaster overtook hihi at Ihe shoft 12tli where he required iive. He t'hen played the last six holes in fours to complete the second half in 38. X. H. AAIOX conmienced badly by being bunkered at the second, third and fourth holes, each of which cost him five. He then reeled off 4, 3, 4, 5, 3, and feached the turn in 38. Except at the 12th where he took three putts, lie registered par figures at everv hole on the inward half. R. S. BROWX (Australia) ])]aved good golf for 77 which included a ball out of bounds at the Uth and a disastrous five at the short ninth. Brown had three threes in a row at the 12th, 13th and 14th and rimmed the cup for an eagle three at tlie 17th and birdie four at the last. K. 1). PIX, another Australian, who was paired wilh Glading, experienced one of the moSf exasperating runs or bad breaks. He played some grand shots but the breaks all went against him. C. L. WIXNER played his usual steady game. He came to Ihe ninth needing three for 36 but took four. On the home half he dropped shots but finished with 79. B. M. ,S1LK and A. OOLLEDGF played good golf on the outward half, Silk going out in 36 and Oolledge in 37, but both slumped on the way home. W. A. EDGAR hau an unhapjiy iirst half and a six at the eiglith and iive at the ninth contributed to liis 41 for the first nine holes. Howevcr, he then

rallied to come home in.36 b.v dint.of beautiful golf.
