WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

FEDERATION MEETING AT . TE HORO Over 200 delegates, officers and members assembxed at the Te Horo Hall recently for the half-yearly council meeting of the Southern Weiiington Feaeration of-Women's Institutes. A welcome was extended by the presi'dent of the hostess instirute, Mrs. Johnson, who expressed the hope that ail present would have a helpful and enjoyable day. Mrs. Kelso, president of the federation made special mention of the wonderful gathering of delegates and members also paying^a giowing tribute to Mrs. Poweil, past president, Mrs. Hume and Mrs. Synnott, wrho were all present. Mrs. Eggers, secretary, gave a comprehensive repoft on the activities of the past six months. This proved most encouraging. The drama festival, though held un'der the most adverse- weather conditions, was a great success, bringing forth capacity houses in all four centres. Reports from 16 institutes in the federation revealed the great work that is being done by this movement to improve and develop conditions of rural life. Besides this, all institutes are working energetically for Britain, and each month pareels of food, fat and, soap are being sent to sister institutes in England. Mrs. Eggers was again elected councillor to the Dominion Federation. New Zealand has sent five representatives to the A.C.C.W. conference in Amsterdam. Tawa Flat presented the best three-minute report. During the afternoon Miss Norma Metson, as guest speaker, gave a most instructive and interesting discourse on the reconditioning of homes. Miss Metson is the rural sociologist, Wellington. Items whicb were enjoyed by all were given by the combined choirs, conducted by Mrs. -Clark and Mrs. Thompson. Mimes .by Hutt Valley Institutes and a bracket of songs by Mrs. Stanley -Ridge. Good service baages were presented to Mrs. Pupich and Mrs. Hook, of Tawa Fiat, and Mrs. Judd, of Paekakariki.
