WOMEN CALL FOR GREATER PROTECTION
WELLINGTON, Nov. 3. A doputalioa from tlic Wellington BUmsewives' Assoeiation is to wait on the Commissioiicr of Poliee, Mr. Cummings, to see wliat steps are being taken for Ihe proteetion of women anci children against certahi oiTenecs. Tlns was deeided at a general meeting of tlie assoeiation when a fruit k and free disenssion took place. Mrs. J. Ashford Ilarris rcad a letter from a member of the assoeiation referring to the growth of a iiurnber oi offences against women aiul children and suggesting that serious atteution be given to the question as well as heavier penalties for sueli offences. The president referred to a message from Mrs.»I\nox Gilmer suggesting better lighting in Ihe streets and the ciear iug of Ihe undorgTowth in the town bgtt 'from the vicinitv of private properties. It was agreed that a letter be forwarded to the Wellington City Council suggesting that, owing to the mimlier of assaults on women and children, the undergrowth in the town belt and parks be eleared as far as possible, that shrubs should be eut to shoulder level and that more aderpiate supervision oi parks and reserves be proVided. It- was added tliat voluntary labour should be called for if sutlicient staff were not a vailable. A furtlier resoluliou called on the assoeiation to approach the Prime Mxnister with a request for the reinstateuient of flogging as a detereut.
