» — SCOTTISH SOCIE'FY MAINTAINS OLD TRADITION . . Maintaining an age old tradition, the Horowhenua Scottish Society and Pipe Band made the "piping in" of the haggis, a feature of their Hallowe'eri Ball in the Regent Ballroom on Friday night. Prior to the commencement of the ball, the combined bands of the Manawatu and Horowhenua Scottish Societies, together with the Caledoniari marching team,'paraded in Oxford Street, and during the evening the Manawatu Band entertained with .selections. The gay tartans of the two bands together with some indiVidual dress tartans, combined to make an attractive setting. To the music of a professional orchestra, dancing was continued till 1 a.m. undef the capable direction'of Mr. Keith McLean, modern and old time being tastefully combined. During the evening, the chief, Mr. J. R. Macfarlane, welcomsd all present on behalf of the society, making particular reference to the" plesence of the Manawatu Pipe Band. . A feature of the evening was the ceremonious "piping in" of the haggis by' Pipe-Majors Yorston (Levin) and Pilcher (Palmerston North), and carried in by Messrs. F. N. Holder and W. R. Jack. In true Scottish style, Mr. V. Nicholson, chief of the Manawatu Scottish Society,' recited with due ceremony the Ode to the Haggis, following, which it was cut and distributed among all present. Later in the evening an attractive home-made supper was served by the women's committee-. The hall decorations, which were bright and festive yet not unduly obtrusive, were the work of the pipe band.
