KATINA PAXINOUS RETURNS TO FILMS
Katina Paxinous, the trilliant Greek actress, who won an Academy Award for her role as Pilar j in "For Whom the Bell Tolls," ! I'ound that her sudden fame in j Hollywood films forced her into j seclusion. Luise Rainer got the > same deal after winning two Oscars. in a row. So did James Dunn. She is back in the movies now— after four years, in one of the leading roles in R.K.O.'s adaption of the Eugene O'Neill play, "Mourning Becomes Electra," as the sinning mother. She is radiantly happy about the type change from Pilar. Casting directors could think of her only as a woman guerilla leader— and such assignJ ments are rare.
Following on her sensational success in "The Unfinished Dance," newcomer Karin Booth has been cast by M.-G.-M. in "The Big City." In her first film, Karin shares honours with Margaret O'Brien and Cyd Charissp. Proof of the studio's high opinion of the young actress is the announcement that in "The Big City" she and Margaret will be co-starred. For the first time in nine years, Robert Preston will sing on the screen in "Whispering Smith," Paramount's technicolour outdoor picture in which he co-stars with Alan Ladd. He will warble "Laramie," a new lusty western ditty by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans, and will furnish his own accompaniment on the piano in an 1890 saloon sequence. He last sang on the screen in "UniOn" Pacific," another pioneer railroad saga.
