BOROUGH ADMINISTRATION
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING OF COUNCIL The usual fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. The Mayor (Mr. R. E. Downes) presided over Crs. R. R. Lind, J. A. Roach, H. Aitchison, W. C. Higgie, E. P,erry, C. G. Wishart and H. L. Norris. The borough foreman (Mr. F. Haley) was also present. Routine business included the granting of an application for a ioad of metal for a footpath entrance to Mr. R. N. Saunders' property. Mr. E. J. Veale asked the permission of the council to instal a culvert in the front of his residence in Grand Street. The application received the favourable consideration of the council, but Mr. Veale is to be notified that it would be more in his interests to use six-inch field pipes in place of the four-inch pipes he proposed to use. A letter was received. from Mr. C. M. Cronquest in which he asked the council to instruct the carrier of the buttermilk from the dairy factory not to use Stout Street on account of the filthy mess being made of the road between Grand Street and Vogel Street intersection. Mr! Cronquest advised that there was a back road available, on which no houses were situated, and if the contractor was to use this no concern would be caused. It was decided that the town clerk advise Mr. Cronquest that the council has no jurisdiction in this matter. With regard to the State houses on the 'intersection of Margaret and Ballance Streets, the district supervisor, replying to the council's letter in connection with the drainage arrangements, stated that owing to the poor soakage in the locality to have a nightsoil system. The health officer considered this method satisfactory. On the motion of Cr. Lind, it was resolved to obtain a report from the health officer on the matter. Building permits which had been approved by the district building c.ontroller were granted to Mr. C. F. Young (dwelling) , H. Hing (dwelflng) and L. G. Sayer (shed) . Cr. Norris suggested that a street crossing sign be painted at the school. It was decided to keep the matter in mind when the sealing of Grey Street was undertaken. . The council extended its thanks to Mr. F. C. Peach for his donation of ,£4 10s towards the domain improvements. It was agreed that Cr. Roach arrange to have the domain buildings cleaned, while the question of suitable locks was left to Cr. Higgie. On the motion of Cr. Higgie it was decided that no action be taken by. the council in siipporting a nomination for the Manawaiii Catchment Bbard.. " • '•/. j. It was ; resolved that ; the !
