CHANCE FOR MAORI BOYS TO LEARN A TRADE
:9 • • • NEW PLYMOUTH, Oct. 20. "It will give countrv boys an opportunity to learn a trade if they wish to do so," said the Commissioner of Apprentices, Mr. H. C. McQueen, at New Plymouth toniglit when announcing that regulations are shortlv to be gazetted to provide maehinery for the operation of the Apprenticeship Amendment Act, 1946. Regulations will fix the scale of lodging allowances for apprentices living away from home. Another advantage to be derivecl from the provision for lodging allowances is the encouragement it will give Maori boys to join a trade. With the raee rapidly increasing in numbers, Mr. McQueen foresees the need to give its youth an outlet in clirections wliere its aptitudes can be usefullv developed. "The demand for labour is wide," he
said, ' ' and in the next two generations we sliall have to face the . need. .to absorb increasing numbers, of Maoris into the industries and trades of -tha Dominion. " ' \
