THE MAYORAL ELECTION
A. W.
PARTON.
Sir, — I am grateful to Mrs. Perry for pointing out some of the details of drainage and sewerage that are still causing her some coneera, and will do my best to answer her questions. A scorm water sewer to take all surface and subterranean water will ultimately diseharge into the 'lake, but not necessarily in a closed drain. This is a question for the engineers. My rough estimate of becween £20,000 and £30,000 will go a long way towards getting rid of this nuisance. I do submit that finaneial questions need our full co-operation. My estimate of a sewerage scheme, based on the experts' figure of £74,000 was £90,000. This is just guesswork because no one • today can safely estimate exact costs. Our paved streets and footpaths may not need so much cutting up for sewers will run at the rear of some sections to serve two lines of houses, and along the verges. There again, this is an engineering problem. What the Department of Health would do is to request the Levin Borough Council to get on with the job. I am fully aware and glad tohave Mrs. Perry 's assurance of her intevest in a drainage scheme so- we can do away with unsatisfactory septic tanks, and • we must" no doubt approach the Government departments concerned to get all the aid possible. Yours elc..
