Re-use of Ealing Wire To the sheep farmer who appreciates the seriousness of the shortage of baling wire, the following news gleaned today from the Overseas Shipowners' Allotment Committee will be cheering. I was told that the committee has arranged to recover wire used on do'uble dump wool bales shipped to the United Kingdom. The first shipment qf this recovered nsed wire is n-ow on its way back to New Zealand for further use. ... Present For Princess An announcement that two dozen solid silver coffee spoons tipped with paua shell, would be sent to Princess Elizabeth as a wedding gift from the city of Auckland, was made by the Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum. He said the spoons, which were now being made by disabled servicemen, would be sent by air se> that they would reach s Princess Elizabeth on or'i before * her wedding day. The spoons would be contained in a box of New Zealand woods. Pork Rationing Possible As a result of suggestions which have been made to the Goyernment, it is likely that the New Zealand housewife may soon be asked to do without pork as a means of aiding Britain. It will be recalled that dufing the "occupati'on" of New Zealand by United States forces, ,pork ' was banned. During the past few days, farming interests have urged that the ban on pork should be reimposed, and housewives might be well advised to order a weekend joint before it vanishes from the normal menu. Bombers For Sale As a preliminary te the disposal of hundreds of surplus aircraft which litter airflelds throughout New Zealand, the War Assets Board is making a start by offering for sale to the public a few of the wellcried machines which served the R.N.Z.A.F. well during the war. For anyone who is interested, there are three Ventura bombers and five P 40 Warhawk fighters .for sale at Nelson and four Hudson bombers at Woodbourne. The main headache still is the 500-odd aircraft which are scattered about Rukuhia tirfield, Haihilton, and seaplanes at Hobsonville, Auckland. Food For Britain Drive It/has been pointed out by the Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, that some misunderstanding has arisen over the phrase "tin day," used at Thursday's food for Britain meeting. Many people had taken this - to mean empty tins for packing purposes. "What was required, said Mr. Burdekin, was as much tinned food as could be spared by householders. On Tuesday and Friday an appeal- would be made and tables would be placed outside the post office for the reception of such food. The original -suggestion of a bin had been dispensed with-, as it ' was thought that the tins might be damaged uimecessarily by that method.
