- W Personal Mr. Cha'n, who has been a resident of Otaki for some time leaves shortly for China. He >will be accompanied. by his little daughter. Mr. J. Grainger, of the Social Security Department, and Mrs. Grainger a'nd family, of Waipukurau/ have taken up residenee at Waitarere Beach. Mr. L. H. Atkins, at one time a leading^Horo whenua cricketer, has been' elected president of the Waipukurau Mercantile Cricket Club. News has. been received of Mr. Ivan Lowe, whose mother resides in Otaki, to the effect that he has made wonderful strides since leaving Otaki, where he was to engage in market gardening. So pleased were his teachers at the Technical College, Wellington, that they begged for his further tuition instead of retiring to gardening at Otaki. He gained the Parents* Association Bursary and the Capetown Bursary, the latter being given for engineering work at Canterbury College. He matriculated with unusuall'y high marks and entered Victoria College, where he passed the intermediate engineering examination, also gaining mathematics and physics prizes. His progress at Canterbury College was also rapid and by the end of the following year he had become a Bachelor of Engineering and then proceeded to study for his M.Sc., taking mathematics as his honours subject, and obtaining a first class pass. His efforts were crowned by awards of travelling scholarships in arts and engineering and the Cook Memorial Prize, which is given for outstanding -honours in mathematics. He returned to Wellington Technical College, flnally departing for overseas last year. News has now been received of his further successes, with honours. During his vacation Ivan toured Europe to study people and their ways of life at other universities. What Ivan will do in the future is at present unknown. Bowling Tournament " Otaki rinks are at present being arranged to make trips to the opening of the Levin, Levin Central, Petone Central and Plimmerton greens on Saturday next. A tournament will be held at Otaki Railway at the weekend. Already severS.1 clubs have signified their intention of bejng present.
