THE MAYORAL ELECTION

"WAIT AND SEE."

,Sar, — In last Friday's "Chronicle," tmder the nom de plume of "A Ratepayer/r a letter appeared ' which I feel calls for some com- I ment. Tlie1 first paragraph is given t tip to belittling a scheme that has : not yet been put to the electors. ' Hdw, therefore, does "Ratepayer" ! knoW it to' be a' fancy bne'. Then , ■the correspondent wonders why it has not been thbught of before. He might as well ask why we did not use the atom bomb on Germany. Then it is inferred that unless elected Mr. .A. W. Parton will not divulge his. scheme.. Surely the eandidate must put his policy to • the people for their approval. Elected or not, the ratepayers will kfiow it. Where does the price come in? The second paragraph has nothing to do with the mayoral election, but is a grouch at the Labour ' Party's slogan, "Something for Nothing." The correspondent must remember that botM parties took the £250 extra they voted themselves, and all line up at Bellamy's for a three course meal at the price of ,one shilling. If "Ratepayer" thinks for a few moments I feel sure he will find ways and means of raisihg funds without increasing the rates. For instance, Irish hospitals by Irish sweepstakes, Tasmania's finance by Tattersall's and the number of organisations that have benefited by our own art unions. I do not know Mr. Parton's scheme, but I think it would be fairer- to aWait judgment until after October 14. Yonrs etc..
