MR. F. H. SMITH DIES AT TROTTING MEETING
^ It was on a sombre note that the annual meeting of the Manawatu Trotting Club opened last night. Pive minutes before the meeting was'due to eonimenee Mr. Fred II. Smith, for many years a ruember of'the eommittee, collapsed and had passed away when the doctor and ambulance arrived. In the intervening 15 minutes Mr. F. Cousins and Mr. L. I. Plimmer, with other members of the clnb, rendered first aid but without success. When the meeting opened the members stood in silence in respect for the late member. Mr. Smith was a w'ell-known trainerowner in the iManawatu district and owned such suceessful horses as Parish. Queen which had a dead heat for first at Claudelands on Saturday. He aiso raced Storm Queen out of which mare ihis most suceessful trotters came. His string of horses was related to Axworthv Star th rough Tornado Lady. Although a cripple Mr. Smith had been known as an energetic worker for trotting. In expressing his regret to the meeting the president, Mr. L. G-. itieger, said it was possible that Mr. Smitli, having devoted his life to trotting^ would have wislied to end his days at a trotting meeting.
