Received Mondav, 8.35 p.m. 1HELBOURNE, Oct. 6. A Gourt penalty and tines totalling £11,650 were imposed by Mr. .Tustice O'Brien in the Civil Court today, on David Galt, flock manufacturer aiul investor. for understatements amounting to £24,239 in taxation returna for 1942-44. Superimposed on the Court penalties is £13,000 which Galt must pav in taxation avoided in those years. The parties diselosed in Court that the Taxation C.ommissioner, iu his own jurisdiction, lias power to impose a tax and doublc penaltv on a further amount of £83,000 of income understated between 1931 and 1941. Urging ieniency for GaJt, his counsel said that if the Court and eommissioner imposed the maximum penalties allowable, Galt might be driven to bankruptcy with a total charge of £150,000 over his^last 14 years of business activity.
