LITTLE-FANCIED ARVADALE PAYS NEARLY A CENTURY AT OTAKI

The Otaki Racing Club's Spring meeting was concluded ih ideal weather and the course was heavy after heavy rain during the week. The attendanee Avas good and the totalisator handled £69,198, compared with £80,550 on the second day last year. • The - total for the meeting was £134,473, as against £152,655^, the decrease being £18,182£. . With "the change in the eondition of the course, first day form ' was not very reliable and only one favourite, Morotai, was first past the po&t. In the Otaki Hack Handicap, won by Arvadale, there was a very large win dividend.

Moutoa Lord Won Well Kajiur aponga was favourite for the hurdles but the winner was Moutoa Lord with Prince Wheriko and Kahurapouga in the minor places. Kahuraponga made the pace for a mile and liis rider, J. Ctarth, kept him on his feet when he was liearly down at the fence iii front of the stauds. Five furlongs from home, Kahuraponga, Prince Wheriko, Moutoa Lord, Sergeant Jack and Walk Off were in close order. Moutoa Lord, Prince Wheriko and Kakuraponga were in iine going to the last fence and Moutoa Lord drew awav froni the others to win by three len"tlis from Prince Wheriko a lengtli and ahalf in front of Kaliurapouga^ a head in front of Sergeant Jack. Next was Walk OfE. Double Pigure Dividend After making a fast ruri from the half-mile to be handy to the leaders at the home turn, The Itip went on to win the first trial'nicely by a head from Nullafi. a couple of leugths in front of Lady Myrtle. Lady Barringtou led to the straight ahead of The Rip, Myfox, Oherry Lax, Nullah, Lady Myrtle, Sly Robin and Iieveller, and it was over 'the last bit tliat The Rip and Nullali drew away to light" the fmisli. Myfox was a good fourtli and Lady Barrington, Miss Kathleen, and Beaulitha were next. Four Horses in Line There was a blanket linish to the Pukekaraka llack Handicap when Lord Phrosa, Clare's Pal, Beau Or and Talili went past almost in line. The order at the half-mile was Celebratiou and Haughty Boy from Master Roe, Veine d'Or, Tribut'e, Tahli, Lady Oratory and Coucrete, and except that Clare's Pal and Beau Or had gotie up fast, there was littie change into the straight where Lord Phrosa, not in the picture at the home turn, finislied brilliantly to win by a noae from Clare 's Pal, half a head in front of Beau Or, a head in front of Tahli. Next were Celebration, Shenandoah, Lady Oratory, Broilyn aud Concrete. Foxella Slippecl the Field. After clearing out from the field three furlongs from home, Foxella hung on to win the big handicap by three lengths from Lord Theio, a neck in front of Kmerge. Going .through the straight the first timo, Lord Theio and Foxella were in front followed by Deliuquent, Emerge, Xgakoti, High Order and Sakuntala. At the five, the order was Foxella and Lord Theio from Xgakoti, Delinquent, Hulabaloo, Emerge, Sakuntala, Treniello, Sheilwyn, Argumentative, Gay Btroller and Silver Rod. Foxella then opened up a break of five lengths on the field and although the gap was closed somcwhat before the home turn was reached, Foxella went on to wiri decisively, and .he was going as well as anv of the others over the last bit. Sheilwvn was fourtli followed by Silver Rod, Argumentative and Delinquent.

Torrent Finished Gamely. The public were^ not far out in the second trial for the placed horses, Torrent, Roinantic and Gay Stitckes, were the best fancied starters. Running to the straight, Roinantic led from Torrent, Helenette, Paper Ruft'le, Beguile and Gay Stitches. Once in line for the judge, Torrent went on to the front and responded uiider pressure to win by a neck from. Roinantic three lengths in front of Gay Stitches. Paper Ruffle was fourth followed by Tote Odds aud Helenette. Arvadale Dpsets Calculations. Sixth into the straight, Awadale finished well on the outer to win the Otaki Hack Handicap by a head from| Belle Auita a nose in front of The1 Pagan, which had made most of the 'pace. The Pagan turiied for home attended by Belle Auita, ldle Along, Grey Plume, Desort Faiul and Arvadale. Belle Auita finished well but failed to beal off the challenge from Arvadale. Gay Joy was fourtli aiul ldle Along, Grey Plume aml Blue Hussar were next. Arvadale paid uearlv a century on the win machine. Ladyship's Good Effort. Ladyship won the open six and her effort was most attractive. Po-Marama led into the straight followed by Ladyship, Omit, Alderman, Merrv Robin, Carmelita and Speeialist. The linish promised to be a good oue, but a furlong from home, Ladyship drew away and won by three lengths from Po-Mnr-ama with Omit two lengths furtlier back. Carmelita was fourth followed by Merry Robin, lron Duke and Gay Corrie. Morotai Won .uecisively. After being well placed early, Morotai was with Ratene as they turned for home in the last race and she went 011 to win decisively by three lengths from Te Ranui, a neck in front of Middoon, which had Ratene and Timsah almost on terms. Ilunch led early, but Ratene had charge at the half to lead to the straight froiu Morotai, Gaystock, Timsah, Commercial, Roman Duke and Middoon. It was not long before Morotai put the issue beyond doubt, but the race for the minor places was a good one. PUKETOI HACK HURDLES, £350; Cne niile and a -half. 2-2 MOUTOA LORD, 11.2 (W.
