The picturesque- village of Castlo Coombe near Chippeuham, where tlu X'evv Zealand Forestry L'nit had its headquarters for a- period during tlu war, has been sold by auction. Tlu1 villagers crowded into the Town Hall Chippenham, and applauded oue an other's successful bids for their own honies. One vvoman, aged 07, whose family lived in a cottage for 200 years, paid £600. Oue man bouglit the police station. OT will-give the. police notic$ to quif, " he said. The Ladv of the Manor, Mrs. K. R. Maurice, was glad tliat manv of her old tenatits were able to buy .their homes but ,was disappointed that nobody had bouglit the village intaet There were no Afi'ers vvlien it was put up for £30,000 but when offered in lots it realised £39,000. The post office, balceries, general store, two intis and 40 eottages were sold. There was no offcr for the manor house itself with 25 acres of woodland. Tt was withdrawn at £14,000.
