SYDNEY, Sept. 30. An extensive programme of shnr, clearance has begun in Sydnoy with the demolition of 37 old h'ouses in tlie suburb of Redfern. Some of the buildings, which are ribbon built cottages. are over 100 vears old. The families which have been residing in them from 10 to 40. vears, have been transferred to army huts where tliey will live for up to two vears pending the completion of the demolition and the erection of blocks of flats. Hundreds of cottages and terrace houses, many still showing signs of damage from the hailstorm last January, are seheduled to be pullecl clown. Some residents have already refused to leave and are prepareci tn withstand a seige. Their attitude is explained by the fact that some cottages rent for as low as 11s fid weeklv.
