NEW MAYORAL NOMINEE

Mr. A. W. Parton To Contest Levin Election

Mr. A. W. Parton, of Queen Street, Levin, will- be a contestant for the Levin mayoralty at the local body elections in November. Making this announcement today, Mr. Parton said that he had called on the present Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, on Friday and outlined his intentions. Mr. Parton will call his first meeting of ratepayers on Tuesday, October 14, in the Century - Hall. His principal concern was for a drairiage scheme for Levin, said Mr. Parton, and, should he be elected, this would be his first aim. Drainage was an absolute and urgent necessity, and at his meeting he would outline a scheme under a system of finance, new to a local body, which would require only the co-operation of ratepayers and not even an increase in rates. Levin, he said, could look forward to great improvements with perhaps some relief from. the present rates. Mr. Parton has resided -in this district for 10 years, and has been a J.P. of 25 years' standing. On two successive occasions he was a member of the Wellington City Council and v^ls organiser of the amalgamation of- Miramar Borough with Wellington City. He is-presi-dent of the Levin . and District Beautifying Society, president of the Wellington Provincial Registered Poultry-Keepers' Association, president of the Levin PoultryKeepers' Association, chairman of the Wellington Egg Marketing Advisory Committee and district representative on the Poultry Foods Committee. He has also served for a term on the Levin Borough Council. Mr. Parton has been sanitary inspector for Canberra, which, he said, had the reputation of having the most advanced sanitation system in the world. He was also a lecturer on sanitation at the Wellington Technical College for many years, and has had extensive experience with the local drainage problem.^
