. WELLINGTON, Sept. 26. Applications for : State houses at the end of August totalled 53,987 of which '14,976 were fi'Qm exserviegmen in the preferentiab eategory, and 39,011 from eivilians, said the Minister in charge of State housing, M r. Hackett today. He added tliat from the inception of the housing sehenie 23,664 new tenaneies had been available t'o applicants in both the civilianf^and exservieemen categories. ~ _ In August the total number of houses let or relet throughout the Dominion . was 172, the districts aifee.ted being Auckland aiid North Auckland 39, Waikato and Bav of Plenty 20, Hawlce's Bay and Poverty Bav 4, Taranaki 8, Wellington, Manawatu and Wairarapa 54, Nelson, Marlborough and W7est Coast. 9, Canterburv '12, Ota'go 14, Soutliland 12. Of lliose tenaneies 91 •were granted to preferential exservieemea's classes. During the month 1110 applications for State tenaneies were lodged comprising 495 applications by eligible exservicemen and 621 by eivilians.
