MAMMOTH PETITION TO SAVE KAURIS
/ WELLINGTON, Sept. 25. A petition comprising 13 bound inchthick volumes of names, surmounted by a cardboard box filled With newspaper clippings, was pfesented by Mr. C. A. MurdOch (Otahuhu) on behalf of Gilbert Archey, museum director, of Auckland, and . 43,911 others praying that the Waipoua forest he declared a national park in order to preserve it in a , state of nature for all time, and that milling and other State 'forest activity cease at once in that area. The petition was wheeied into the chamher on a hand trolley and when it was placed on the memher'S deSk, its height almost hid Mr. Murdoch from view. Mr. Murdoch, speaking over the top of the petition, informed the House that additional signatiirOs had been obtained which would bring the total to 47,289. Considerable merriment was caused when Mr. Paikea (Northern Maori), presenting a petition with the same object in view, but with three signatories .only, said he had "quality if not quantity".
