SHANNON RED CROSS
"HELP THE CHILDREN" CAMPAIGN At the Dominion executive nieeting held i'n Wellington recently, appeals from almost every country were received begging for assistance for clothing. The letters from other National Red Cross Societies and from consuls of several countries showed that the position, instead of improving, was worse than at any time since the. war. Most of the clothing sent during the war years had worn out,-manu-facture was lagging very far behind needs; disorganisation still existed an dthe coldest winter in memory, with very little firing, was being experienced. After considering all the appeals the Red Cross decided to launch a campaign called the "Help the Children" campaign' to obtain clothing for the 45,000,000 children in Europe who are reported to be underclad and underfed. So serious is the position that a special envoy is being sent from Europe to Australia and New Zealand to plead the cause of the children, but the New Zealand Red Cross decided not to waste the time waiting for the envoy, but to launch the appeal at once. The goods which may be second hand (good wearable condition only) or new, or material for making up, will be shipped to the British Red Cross, which has a first hand knowledge of priority and [ other requirements. I Red Cross centres all over New Zealand are working on this appeal J and reports of splendid responses are being received. The Shannon Red Cross has" already received an excellent collection of clothing from Moutoa W.D.F.F. and good donations of cash from Shannon W.D.F.F. and Shannon Women's Institute. The committee is holding a' street stall on Friday, September 26, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., when donations of saleable goods and buyers will be equally welcome. Mesdames J. Easton (president) , S. W. Barber (Moutoa) and J. T. Bovis will be in charge of the stall and the ladies of the Red Cross committee, Mesdames Burtt, Bur-
ling, Chester, Griffiths, J. D. Campbell, Wylie, Hateley, Rasmussen and Edmonds, will be assisting. Donations of goods or cash may be left with any of these ladies and will be acknowledged. The money received from the stall will be used for the purchase of bulk material for making into clothing, and offers of assistance with the making up will be gratefully received. The local committee has also received a call from Red Cross headquarters for knitters to make long sleeved k-haki pullovers for soldiers in hospital. An appeal is here made for knitters to help in this work, which is urgent and very necessary. The secretary,* Mrs. J. T. Bovis, will gladly receive offers of help with this knitting.
