Most of the short entry of 1600 head consisted of hoggets. Although there were 110 really top quality pens, buyers were ready to pay top prit-es, bidding being animated even for inferior lines. Hogget values were fully 5s a head above those ruling at ; this time last year. The largest draft of ewes and lambs for the season sold at 24s 6d all counted. Another srnaller draft, the ewes of whieh were very low mouthed, sold at 22s 9d aJl counted. The best priee for hoggets was *36s 8d. Other good hoggets realised 35s 4d to 36s ld, mediuin sorts making 32s ld and 32s 2d and inferior hoggets to 31s. A small pen of wethers was traded at 43s lOd. Probably because lamb prices are no ionger being paid for hoggets in the freezing works, the fat sheep seetiou was far better supplied with hoggets. Values were firm. Ileavy hoggets inade to 45s 7d, medium selling at 38s 4d to 39s l()d and lighter 33s ld to 35s lOd. Extra prime young ewes sold at up to 39s ld with prime older ewes at 34s lOd to 35s lOd, medium at 31s 7d tc 32s lOd and unfinished at 27s 7d. Heavy wethers brought up to 49s 4d, medium making 43s ld. Spirited bidding wras seen when a yarding of 850 head of store eattle was offered. West Coast buyers were operiting and in faee of a strong inquiry the market assumed a very firm tone, values showing a definite upward trend. Both male and female eattle shared'in the spring demand, young beasts being partieularly keenly sought after. Bulloeks sold at £14 12s. 6d to £14 19s, otliers- be'ing passed in at\ £13 10s to £14 15s. Three-year steers sold at £13 12s and two-off steers £10 10s to £11 13s, small rising two-year steers brought to £8 17s. Cows in profit, a fe.w with ealves at foot, were traded at £10 5s. In-ealf cows were passed in at £9 5s. Emptv cows made £10, three and four-year heifers £10 14s, rising three-year heifers £10 and two-off heifers £10 6s to £10 13s. The market for ( beef was erratie with ox in the maia easier. Included in the. yarding of 230 head was soiue good quality beef. West Coast buyers entered the market but "even their activitv failed to stem entirely the easing for ox. Heifers and cows inet with a fairly steady sale. Cattle from the Gisborne district again took ,the spotlight by gaining top price for ox at £23 8s Gd to £24 8s 6d. Other prime ox brought £21 16s to £22 18s 6d with lighter at £19 ,3s (id to £20 3s Od. Prime hoilers sold at £14 ls to £15 8s Od and. medium £12 18s Gd to £13 lSs 6d Prime cows sold from £12 16s to £13 18s, medium £11 6s to £12 3s 6d and unfinished £9 13s 6d to £10 16s. Vealers brought £3 10s to £6 2s 6d.
