MILITARY CAMPS TO HOUSE IMMIGRANTS

-©> AUCKLAND, Sept. 10. Portions of the Narrow Net-k and North Head rnilitary camps will be uned to house assisted immigrants arriving m New Zealand under the Government 's immigration seheme. Conflrming this in a telephone eonversation with the Herald, the Secretary of Labour, Mr. H. L. Bockett, said one eainp would be for aingle men and the other for single women. Similar use would- be made o: the camp at Fort Dorset, Wellington, and the suitability of other camps was under eonsideration. The camps will De under the eontrol of the Department ot Labour and Employment and will be conducted in similar fashion to the present iTidustrial hostels and camps vvhere the charge for board is 32s Gd for liiale workers and 30s for women. Each camp will be in charge of a departmcn tal supervisor. Mr. Bockett said the Narrow Neelt and North. Head camps would not be ready for oeeupation in time for the arrival of the next d'raft or immigrants in the liner Atlantis eariy next nionth. He emphasised that the department was only "making use of aecommodation that was not suitable for housing married couples and that the buildings would require little in the way of alterations. The immigrants were.at. liberty to iind accommodation elsewhere i-f they desired. Tenders have already been called for catering at Fort Dorset camp which will be for male immigrants. It has accommodation for more than 100.
