THURSDAY'S SITTING - The S.M. Gourt at Otaki on Thursday was presided over by Messrs. H.'Jepson and F. H. Critchley, J.'s.P., and the following cases were dealt with : — Expensive Poultry Two young men, Athol Raika and Clifford Nash, were charged with the theft of poultry, the property of David Cragg, the
former stealmg two iowis to tne value of £2, and the latter one fowl to the value of £1. Qonstable Calwell stated. that both young men had been previously convicted, and that they had visited Cragg's farm, when the first fowl taken was for a party, but that a return visit was made and two more fowls taken. Both lads had been on probation but Nash had been behaving well. However, the same could not be said of Raika, who had been before the Court occasionally. The fowls taken had been paid for. A fine of £2 each (costs 10s) was imposed. Traffic Breaches
The Traffic Department (Inspector Doggett) proceeded against 1 Beatrice Marshall on a charge of driving without due care and { attention. In evidence, the Inspec- I toi* stated that he had noticed the ] car being driven in a dangerous manner and when defendant was stopped and questioned she could offer 110 reasonable excuse for committing the breach. There was 110 , appearance of defendant, who was j fined £2 10s (costs 10s). I Jack Lawrence was charged with | driving a car which was not | properly equipped with headlights.Defendant did not appear and was , fined £1 (costs 10s). Charged with excessive speeding, Colin Hi'tchcock was fined £3 10s (costs 10s). For the Traffic Department, Inspector Davis stated that defendant was travelling at 58 m.p.h. when stopped. Hitchcock' did not appear. On a similar charge, Ross Bennett Simpson, who also did not appear, was fined £5 (costs) 10s. Inspector Davis stated that defendI ant's speed in the borough was 46 l m.p.h. When questioned defend- i | ant stated that his accelerator had I Ijambed, but on inspection. it was4 ! found to be in order. I On a charge of not possessing a driver's license William Hayes was fined 30s (costs 11s) . Inspector Davis stated that defendant was riding a motor-cycle with a pillion passenger ' and on being stopped failed to produce a license. Wandering Stock Eileen Ransfield, who* did not appear, was charged with allowing a horse to wander. Inspector Davis stated that the animal had been found wandering at night and had been impounded. It had remained in the pound for three days. A fine of 5s (costs 10s) was imposed.
