BANDSMEN'S BALL WAS COLOURFUL SCENE

" ^ last night's ftjngirfon in levin As a fitting culmination to months of practise for the forthcoming conteSt ih Palmerston North, and ih order to give the public an Opportunity of meeting some of * the contestants socially, the Levin Municipal Band last night held their first annual ball. A featufe of the evening was the appeafanCe in Oxford'Street of the Feildihg Miinicipal Juhior Bandt wh'ich, led by Drum-Majoi1 G. Stanton created considerable public ifiterest, with- its creditable demonstration OL street -marching. Lateir it entertained a large crowd with popular band selectlons played under the baton of Mr. j. B. Fleetwood. Parading behind , the band in its street march was - - their own marching team which, inspired well earned applause. The Regent Hall was suitably decorated for such an occasion, murals of bandsmen presenting the rnain theme, with native ferns, fiags of all nations, streamers and coloured lighcs adding a festive air to the function. Dimmed lighting, gay evening dresses and the attrabtive uniforms of the bandsmen presented a pleasihg scene, remiiiiscent of the military balls of the past. With a view to utilising dancmg space to the best advantage, the orchestral stage was placed in the centre of the hall and was attraCtively screened with native ferhs and spring flowers. Guests of the band were members of the citizens' eommittee and the senior Feilding band, which will also be contestants at the forthcoming contest. Welcoming the visitors, the president of the Municipal Band, Mi\ C. H. Nelson, complimented the marching girls and Feilding Band on their fine performances and thanked them all for attending the function. He also paid tribute to the work of Mr. Stanley and the boys from the Training Farm in coliecting nati-ve fernery for the decorations, and Mr. H. Plimmer j for manufacturing the murals, and Mr. Havelock Williarhs for vthe donating of the prize for the competition dance. He also thanked all those who had cont'ribUted towards the success of the function and congratulated those responsible for the decorations. A special vote of thanks is due to Sergeaht W. Grainger and his officers, and ;Mr.,M. Kehoe, who was assisred by Mr. C. H. Fippard, traffic inspector (Feilding), for making the very necessary arrangements for the cbhtfollihg of traffic and thus making the street parade possible. j The conductor of the Feilding 1 Municipal Band, Mr. J. Fleetwood,

thanked Mr. Lester and the Levin band for their hospitality and expressed pleasure at the good eomradeship existing between the bands. The drum-major of the visitihg band, and the coach of the band marching team, Mr. G. Stanton, also added his thanks and the hope that the Levin Band would be their guests at Feilding, on some futufe date. The eommittee responsible fpr the function comprised: Messrs Bowater, G. Fox Jnr., G. R. Lester, A. Dobson, C. Weaver and Miss M. Harrison. The decorations - and layout of the hall were the work of Messrs. K. Bowater, G; Fox afid Miss Hafrison, who were assisted by the eommittee and bandsmen. The members of the marchifig team who were present in their smart uniforms of gold pleated skirts with green tops, were Misses B. Allen, M. Jarrett, B. Hewett, N. Domett, P. Kent and M.
