Opening Of Spring Season

WELLINGTON, This Day. Spring racing in the North Island will be ushered in tomorrow by the opening of the Wanganui and Avondale meetings. Feature event of" the day will be the Avondale Cup in which such good middle-distance performers as Valley Boy, Howe, Chung Chong, Royal Charter, Coogee,. and Precedency will clash over a mile and three furlongs. Improvers in the field to make it more interesting are Honora, Gay Youth, Our Gold and Fianna Fail. Judged by his ^ splendid performance against that . brilliant mare, Soneri, in the Winter Cup at Riccarton, Howe should keep his northern event . busy, though he is attempting a distance he is not accustomed to. He is to be ridden by his usual jockey, W. J. Broughton. Both Valley Boy and Howe are the ruling favourites for the Cup, with also plenty of support for Chung Chong. Howe should be one of the hardest to beat. The fields for the opening day of the Wanganui meeting are well up to standard, so much so that prodivision or divisions in the Maiden Race and the Durie Hack have had to be made. However, it is expected that divisions in both races will be avoided. Other meetings to be held are the Otago Hunt and the New Brighton Trots. Spring racing is always difficult to follow and it would not surprise if some "tall" dividends are hoisted at all the meetings tomorrow. Betting at the four meetings will be win and place.
