SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The usual fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Those present were the Mayor (Mr. R. E. Downes) and Crs. R. R..Lind, J. A. Roach, H. Aitchison, W. C. Higgie, C. G. Wishart and H. L. Norris. A letter was received from Mr. A. H. Richards drawing the attention of the council to a leaking water valve at the north end of Grand Street. The borough foreman was instructed to have the necessary repairs carried out. Mr. A. F. Birss made application for the council to instal a § inch water supply lead to his property in Sheehan Street instead of the a i-nch lead now installed. It was decided to carry out an inspection of the work and report to the next meeting. Permission was granted , to Mr. W. S. Gardner to shift a shed on his property to a more suitable position provided no material other than in the present building is used. Regarding the matter of insuring the members of the local fire brigade within the meaning of the Workers' Compensation Act, it was agreed on the motion of Cr. Aitchison that this be carried out at a premium of £6 12s 3d per year as outlined in a letter to the council. The National Library Service, forwarded information in connection with a scheme whereby books could be sent to the library for short term loans as required. This matter was left in the hands of the library committee for their decision. On the motion of Cr. Norris it was agreed that the town clerk contact the Manawatu County Council and ascertain if their grader would be available to carry out work on the borough streets and if so what the charges would be. Cr. Roach reported that the cleaning up of the grounds at the rear of the council chambers had been completed and the work of tidying the section recently purchased by the council was being put in hand. Cr. Wishart, reporting on behalf. of the fire brigade, stated that the members had fully discussed the question of purchasing a section as a new site for the fire station, but it was found that some of the see-. tions available were not suitable for the purpose and in other cases the price was prohibitive. Cr. -Wishart said. that the brigade had decided to communicate with the district engneer of the Public Works Depar;ment asking him if he would inspect the present building and at the same time the alterations required to house the new fire engine will be pointed out to him and his approval asked for. When a reply is received the matter will come before the council. The passing for payment of accounts amounting to £236 11s lld terminated the business of the meeting.
